What is an extraction forceps, whichever the pattern?
A hinged, plier-type instrument that grips a tooth by its crown or root so it can be loosened and lifted from the socket. Each pattern is built for one tooth position rather than being general-purpose: beak width, beak angle, and whether the two beaks match or one is pointed and one bifurcated all change with the tooth the pattern is made for. The handle is straight on upper (maxillary) patterns, and bent at the shank on lower (mandibular) patterns.
How does the English pattern work?
The English pattern is a set of numbered figures, and each figure fits one tooth group and one jaw. From TGI's catalog:

How does the American pattern work?
American-pattern forceps carry catalog numbers rather than figure numbers, and the system includes universal patterns:
No. 150, the universal upper forceps: both beaks are shaped alike, so one instrument grips upper incisors, canines and premolars on either side.
No. 151, the lower universal forceps: one pattern for the mandibular arch rather than for a single tooth position.
Other widely cataloged American numbers include No. 88R and 88L (upper molar), the cowhorn Nos. 16, 17 and 23 (lower molar) and Nos. 18L and 18R (upper third molar). TGI's catalog lists No. 150 and No. 151; the other American-pattern numbers are made to order.
Which should a distributor stock?
The pattern your customers' dentists already use. Dental schools and practices tend to train and work in one system, and a clinic that uses English figures will not swap to American universals because a distributor stocks them. Ask your buyers which figures or numbers they reorder, and order those.
